"I am the Co-artistic Director of the international physical theatre company Teatro EnVilo. I am coming to Arterra to work on the dramaturgical structure of our second play "Generation Why" which we premiered in March 2016 in Madrid. We are presenting the show at the Brighton Fringe next May and want to rewrite some elements of the play to add weight and coherence to it. I am excited to be sharing this wonderful creative space with artists from other disciplines than mine!"

Jamie Rodriguez - The Palette of Lobao da Beira

This artist will be in ARTErra for 5 weeks.

"My installations are inspired by historical, political atrocities and social oppression and injustice involving the landscape/cityscape; boundaries and barriers that are created and continue to exist within the landscape. I am fascinated by both the duality of natural beauty and the dark hidden mysterious, sacred content that is sometimes lurking within a particular landscape and its history and people. The agenda of my artwork is that I believe that art should be used as a reminder and device to educate and draw awareness to topics, events and social issues that have shaped our societies and psyche. Through my personal experiences of location, memory and displacement, I have become sensitive to the evil realities of what human beings are capable of doing to one another and I believe that these acts and events can not be forgotten or ever repeated.
My work is about taking the traditional landscape/cityscape painting depiction and juxtaposing it with three dimensional sculpture elements. The painting itself is the nucleus and centerpiece for the installation in which everything is built around.Aesthetically I what to challenge the role that traditional landscape/cityscape paintings has played in art history by attempting to put the painting outside of it’s comfort zone within a gallery setting and it’s predictability. I aim to within the space of a gallery attempt to abuse my power as the artist to deny you as the viewer the freedom to access my paintings by using the boundary as a sort of obstacle that can not be breached.
I believe because of this, it forces one into questioning the physical and psychological role that boundaries play within our landscape/cityscapes and psyche. A boundary generally separates two regions while linking them at the same time. It does not become impermeable until human surveillance fashions a final barrier, a blockage that turns any approach into or outside of the boundary into a lethal risk. This results in the fact that any closed boundary line is indispensable for the delimitation of absolute power. Therefore my boundary places a limitation on how you interact with the painting itself and the installation interacts within the culture of a space.
My purpose and intent of my landscape/cityscape paintings is that paintings were used at one point in history to tell stories to those people who were not literate and paintings still can act as a universal form of communication and information. When I create a painting of a specific place, as an artist I am describing the history of those who live there by gradually documenting it. In viewing my work familiar imagery and images, can bridge communication gaps regardless of what language they speak. I recreate places that are visually striking, yet common, I give my viewer a surprising sense of having been there and leave no excuse to believe to think we are all to different."

Adam Melbye & Julia Reidy- Tennis of all kinds duo music projet

Julia Reidy and Adam Pultz Melbye são o duo de musicos que participam neste projeto. Sediados em Berlim, mas ela australiana e ele holandês, criaram este projeto musical ( guitarra e baixo) e estarão no ARTErra a trabalhar para o álbum ( já o segundo) que irão gravar este ano lá mais para a Primavera.



" The residency of Tennis of All Kinds (Julia Reidy and Adam Pultz Melbye) is based on an interest in the peculiarities of stringed instruments and their resonant capabilities.
During the residency, Reidy and Melbye will explore tuning systems that make their instruments resonate in new fashions, allowing the two musicians to create extended compositions. Concentrating on the physical, psychophysical and aesthetic aspects of fundamental musical building blocks such as the harmonic and inharmonic spectrum, the duo will create a series of compositions that will form the basis of Tennis of All Kinds’ second album to be recorded in the spring of 2017.

Tennis of All Kinds is a duo formed in Berlin in 2015 by Australian guitarist Julia Reidy and Danish double bassist Adam Pultz Melbye.
The duo released its debut cassette tape on opalmine/Noema in October 2016."

"During the ARTErra residency I am interested in building a series of pieces which talk about space as a subtle zone that is traversed. I am keen to see what is pendant, empty, like a trace; to centre my view on the loss andemptiness generated by displacements: from movements there is always something left either in the interior or in the exterior. Starting from materiality and shape, I intend to work with images, videos and objects which disarticulate the way of observing things, thus waking tactile perception.Skin -as a film and cover of what exists- and time, will be present under the shape of an expansive plague, a contamination."

Catherine Jonhson- Eco Kids Project

 

Catherine Johnson é uma artista  e professora de ciências  que vive em Seattle, Washington , EUA . Catherine cria a sua arte também para alimentar  a discussão de temas importantes como a justiça social e proteção ambiental. Durante a sua residência artística , ela vai trabalhar com os alunos  da aldeia de Lobão da Beira celebrarando o meio ambiente local. Os alunos irão ter a oportunidade de explorar diferentes técnicas arísticas  em diferentes suportes . Os indivíduos de cada peça vai ser animais , peixes e plantas. Junto com cada peça de arte , os alunos irão discutir como um ambiente limpo é importante para manter a beleza de sua localidade. Juntos, eles vão criar uma mensagem para enviar aos agentes ambientais locais e nacionais . As crianças têm uma voz importante na discussão de como nos tratamos uns aos outros e da natureza que nos rodeia.Catherine

Washington, USA. Catherine creates art to cultivate discussion about 
important themes such as social justice and environmental protection. 
During her artist residency, she will work with students to celebrate 
the local environment. Students will practice different fine art skills 
while creating art in different media. Subjects of each piece will be 
animals, fish, and plants.  Along with each piece of art, students will 
discuss how a clean environment is important to uphold the beauty of 
their town.   Together, they will craft a message to send to local and 
federal environmental agents. Children have an important voice in the 
discussion of how we treat one another and the nature around us.

Poderemos ter acesso a algumas das suas criações no final da sua residência, dia 24 e 25 de Setembro em Lobão da Beira na Sala dos Vidros no adro da igreja.

Marie Louise lives in Geneve and she creates shes artwork in papper for more than 10 years. She makes the paper too! She will stay in ARTErra for 3 weeks and in the end she will display some pieces in the village Glass Room gallery.

"My project is about find inspiration, tranquility and really think about where I want to focus my work. The idea is to make different illustrations that I can use later to make tote bags , T-shirts and different media to promote my brand " Maytasuna ". I want to explore the color, and the forms with the watercolor and create abstract illustrations".

João Rosmaninho - Fiction & Architecture 25th 29th August

 João Rosmaninho (Lisboa, 1979) é licenciado em Arquitectura pela Universidade do Minho (2002), mestre em Ciências da Comunicação pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2009) e doutorando em Cultura Arquitectónica pela Universidade do Minho (a terminar em 2016). É docente na Escola de Arquitectura da UM (desde 2002), onde integra o Lab2PT (desde 2014) e onde foi também colaborador no respectivo Centro de Estudos (2009- 2010). Foi ainda investigador visitante em Harvard University – GSAS (2013) e em University College London – the Bartlett (2014). O seu interesse de investigação incide nas ligações entre a Ficção e a Arquitectura e é nesse campo que vem publicando artigos (desde 2003) e apresentando comunicações em encontros e conferências nacionais e internacionais (desde 2005). Para além das actividades acima mencionadas, João persiste em manter uma actividade projectual activa (desde 2011) com vários projectos de arquitectura construídos. "Porque o cinema contribui criativa e activamente nos processos de percepção e apreensão de um espaço ou, no caso, de uma cidade, decidimos tomar Lisboa e as suas representações fílmicas para uma investigação no intervalo entre a arquitectura e o cinema. Assim, sob uma análise de carácter cinematográfico (mas também cinéfilo), decidimos levantar e ver todo o cinema de ficção produzido na capital portuguesa e montá-lo segundo novas narrativas. A partir desta ideia desenvolvemos uma tese de doutoramento com o título “Lisboa no Cinema”, a qual serve de base teórica à produção de um filme sonorizado durante a residência no “ARTErra”.

Esta pintora iraniana a viver em França estará em residência cerca de duas semanas trabalhando nas suas aguarelas de pequenos tamanhos. "Espero conseguir trabalhar no meu livro de arte. E também no meu projecto para a exposição em Setembro e Outubro em França."

"The title of my Project is "Transform the chaos". I'd like to present the positive side of the chaos, that the result of disorder could be something positive and creative. Order is born from chaos. According to the ancient Greeks, chaos is the creator of everything and is the natural state of the things. It is not the attraction to order, but rather the absence of a specific type of visible order. If we had everything perfectly ordered in our mind we would be in a neutral position. If everything in our life follows  routine and order, it would stagnate. Every contrary to routine - disorder, chaos - aids the births of something new.
"Chaos is not simply a totally irreversible disorder, but rather a unique opportunity to mobilize the system to a completely different level of order, which is an opening and a new opportunity of creativity, development and security."

"O título do meu projeto é "trasformar o caos". Eu gostaria de apresentar o lado positivo do caos, que o que pode resultar do distúrbio pode ser algo positivo e criativo. Da ordem nasce caos. Para os gregos antigos, o caos é o criador de tudo e é o estado natural das coisas. Não é a atracçao para ordem, mas a ausência de um tipo específico de ordem visível.
Se tivéssimo tudo perfeitamente ordenado na nossa mente, esterámos numa posição neutra. Se tudo em nossa vida for rotina e da ordem. estagnariamos. O que contraria a rotina - desordem, caos -a o de algo novo. O caos não é simplesmente una doença totalmente irreversível, mas sim uma oportunidade única para mobilizar o sistema para um nível completamente diferente de ordem, que é simultaneamente uma abertuta e uma nova oportunidade de criatividade, desenvolvimento e segurança."

Donna Tam, artist from China in ARTErra- 5Th to 19th July

"Through this residency program, I wish to explore the paradoxical interaction between rural and urban; between natural and artificial. My artwork will be in form of "Abstract Painting Installation".
During the first week of the stay, I will explore the environment and meditate, and record my feelings in notes, sketches, photos and videos. I will also collect natural materials from the site which are potentially relevant to my art work development and play around with them.
In the second week I will do some try-out pieces in relation to the site where I am going to showcase my work.
My show will last for 1 week."


"Através deste programa de residências eu gostaria de explorar a interação paradoxal entre o rural e o urbano; entre o natural e o artificial.
Os meus trabalhos artísticos terão a forma de "Instalação Pintura abstrata".
Durante a primeira semana da estadia, vou explorar o ambiente e meditar, registrar os meus sentimentos em notas, esboços, fotos e vídeos. Eu também irei recolher materiais naturais do local que são potencialmente relevantes para o meu desenvolvimento
